Safeties for dealer stock

Most used vehicles sold off a lot in Ontario go out with a Safety Standards Certificate, and since the province moved inspections to DriveON, the certificate is issued electronically rather than on paper. The inspection covers brakes, tires, steering, suspension, lights, body structure and the other items the standard lists. The Ontario safety inspection page goes into the detail.

The safety is $200, before tax, parts extra if anything needs fixing to pass. Each failed item comes back with a reason and a price, so you can decide car by car whether a vehicle is worth the work or better sent to auction. Brakes, tires, steel brake lines and suspension joints are where most Ottawa vehicles fall short, because road salt gets to all of them.

Pre sale inspections and reconditioning

Before you buy a vehicle at auction or on trade, an inspection tells you what it will cost to make it retail ready. That turns a guess into a number you can use in the buying price. Inspection time is billed by the hour, the same rate as any other inspection.

Reconditioning is the work that follows. On a typical small lot vehicle that means:

  • Brake pads, rotors and hardware, and any rusted brake lines
  • Tires mounted and balanced, or the winter set on rims swapped for the season
  • A four wheel alignment, so the car drives straight on the test drive
  • Oil and filter, fluids, wipers, bulbs and the cabin air filter
  • Finding and fixing the cause of a check engine light, rather than just clearing it
  • Suspension parts that will fail the safety or clunk on the test drive

Clearing codes without fixing the cause is easy to spot on a scan, because the readiness monitors reset. A buyer who brings the car to an independent shop for a pre purchase inspection will see it, and so will the next mechanic. It is cheaper to fix it once.

Alignment and calibration in one bay

Plenty of used stock arrives with a fresh windshield, a replaced bumper cover or new suspension parts. Any of those can leave the driver assist cameras and radar aimed slightly wrong, and the car may not throw a warning light to tell you. The forward camera behind the windshield and the radar behind the front bumper both need calibrating to the manufacturer’s procedure after that kind of work.

Here the Daytona four post alignment lift and the camera based alignment and calibration station share one bay, with the target boards on a stand in front of the lift. That means a wheel alignment and the ADAS calibration that should follow it are done in the same place, in the right order, on the same level floor. The alignment is from $125 and calibration from $200, both before tax, and the alignment comes with a before and after printout you can keep in the deal file.

Small business fleets

A trades van that is off the road costs the repair bill plus a day of lost work. For small fleets, the useful thing is planned maintenance on a schedule the vehicles can actually keep, and quick answers when something breaks.

That means oil changes and scheduled service by the manufacturer’s severe service schedule, since work vans and delivery cars do short trips, idling and heavy loads, the conditions the severe schedule was written for. Brakes get checked at every visit, because loaded vans wear them fast. Tire swaps in late October and April, alignments when the tires start wearing on one edge, and safeties for vehicles that change hands within the business or get sold off.

The shop handles cars, cargo vans and light trucks on the two post lifts and the four post alignment lift.

Booking as a dealer or fleet

The booking page supports dealer bookings directly, around the clock. Choose the service, pick a time, and add the vehicle by scanning the VIN with your phone camera, which is the fastest way to log stock. Use the notes to list everything you want done, and attach up to four photos of damage, warning lights or tire wear. For a group of vehicles, book them as separate appointments so each one has its own record. Weekday drop off runs until 4pm, and the shop is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and Saturday from 9am to noon.

Paperwork and invoicing

Each vehicle is written up against its VIN, so the safety, the alignment printout and the repair list stay tied to the right unit. That matters when you are tracking reconditioning cost per car or service history per van.

For dealers and fleets just getting started, the simplest first step is to book one vehicle and see how the process works before sending more.

Questions

How much is a dealer safety inspection in Ottawa?

At Scorpion Auto Tech the Ontario Safety Standards Certificate inspection is $200 before tax, the same price for dealers as for anyone else. If a vehicle needs work to pass, you get a list and a price for each item, and the repairs are only done once you approve them. Certificates are issued electronically through DriveON.

Can a used car dealer book safety inspections online?

Yes. The Scorpion Auto Tech booking page lets dealers book directly, any time of day. Add the vehicle by scanning the VIN with a phone camera or entering the year, make and model, and note anything already known about it.

What is used car reconditioning?

Reconditioning is the mechanical work that gets a used vehicle ready for retail sale. It usually means brakes, tires, alignment, fluids, wipers and bulbs, clearing the cause of any warning lights, and fixing whatever stands between the vehicle and a safety. The goal is a car that passes, drives straight and does not come back a week after it sells.

Does a car need ADAS calibration after a windshield replacement?

Usually, if the car has a forward facing camera mounted at the windshield for lane keeping or automatic emergency braking. The new glass and bracket move the camera slightly, and the manufacturer calls for a calibration afterwards. At Scorpion Auto Tech ADAS calibration starts at $200 before tax.

Do you maintain small business fleet vehicles?

Yes, for cars, cargo vans and light trucks. Oil changes and scheduled service, brakes, tires, alignments and safeties for vehicles that need them.
