The right oil is the one your manual names

Two numbers on the oil bottle get all the attention, the viscosity like 0W20 or 5W30. They matter. The first number is how easily the oil flows on a cold start, which is when most engine wear happens, and a 0W oil moves to the top of the engine faster on a minus 25 morning than a 10W. The second number is how thick it stays at operating temperature.

The part people miss is the approval. Many manufacturers publish their own oil standards. GM engines call for dexos approved oil, Volkswagen and Audi list standard numbers like 504 00 or 508 00, and Mercedes, BMW and others have their own. Many turbocharged direct injection engines were tested on specific oils because of timing chain wear and low speed pre ignition. We go by what the manual or the manufacturer’s data lists for your engine, not by what is on the shelf.

Oil life monitors and severe service

Most newer cars have an oil life monitor that counts engine revolutions, temperature and run time rather than kilometres. It is generally reliable, and it will ask for a change sooner if you drive the way most people in Ottawa, ON drive in winter. Trust it more than a sticker that says 5,000 km.

If your car has no monitor, check the maintenance section of the manual. There are usually two schedules, normal and severe, and the severe one fits more drivers than the name suggests. Short trips where the engine never fully warms up, idling in the driveway to clear the windshield, stop and go traffic, and long stretches below freezing all count. On those cars, moisture and unburned fuel collect in the oil. A milky film under the oil filler cap in February is the visible sign.

What an oil service here includes

The car goes up on a lift for an oil change, which is the best chance most cars get to be looked at underneath between bigger jobs. Drain the oil, replace the filter and the drain plug gasket where the car uses one, refill to the correct level, and reset the maintenance reminder. While it is up, we look at:

  • Oil and coolant leaks, and the condition of the engine and transmission mounts
  • Brake lines, brake hoses and the edges of the rotors
  • CV boots, tie rod and ball joint boots
  • The exhaust and its hangers
  • Tire tread and pressure, and any tire wear that suggests an alignment problem

None of that turns into work without a phone call. If something looks worn, we tell you what it is, how urgent it is, and the price. A rusted brake line spotted during an oil change is a far cheaper conversation than one found after it bursts, which is why the look underneath matters as much as the oil. The brake repair page covers what happens to brake lines on Ottawa cars.

Fluids and filters on their own schedule

Oil is one fluid among several. Engine coolant breaks down over the years and loses its corrosion protection, which matters for aluminium radiators and heater cores. Automatic transmission fluid, differential and transfer case oil on all wheel drive vehicles, and brake fluid each have their own intervals in the manual. Some are listed as lifetime fluids, which in practice tends to mean the life of the warranty.

The engine air filter keeps dust out of the intake, and the cabin air filter cleans the air you breathe and keeps the heater and A/C airflow strong. A clogged cabin filter is a common reason defrost feels weak in winter. Both are cheap and quick to check.

Spark plugs and timing belts

Modern iridium and platinum spark plugs last a long time, often well past 100,000 km, but they are not permanent. Plugs left in too long get hard to remove from aluminium heads and can cause misfires that damage the catalytic converter. If the car already has a misfire, see the engine repair page.

Timing belts are the big scheduled item on engines that have them. The manual gives an interval in kilometres and years, whichever comes first, and the years part catches low mileage cars. On an interference engine a snapped belt lets the pistons hit the valves, turning a planned job into an engine repair. The water pump, tensioner and idler pulleys usually get replaced at the same time since the labour overlaps. Engines with timing chains do not have an interval, but they depend on clean oil changed on time to keep the chain and tensioners healthy.

Booking routine service

Book an oil change or scheduled service through the booking page, any time of day. Scanning the VIN with your phone camera pulls up the exact engine, which means the right oil and filter are ready. If your manual calls for a specific service at your current kilometres, list it in the notes. If the seasonal tire change is coming up in late October or April, the two can go on one visit.

Questions

How often should I change my oil in an Ottawa winter?

Follow your car's oil life monitor or the severe service schedule in your owner's manual, not the longest interval on the bottle. Short trips in the cold never let the oil get hot enough to boil off moisture and fuel, which is exactly what severe service means. Most Ottawa drivers who mostly do short runs belong on that schedule.

What counts as severe driving conditions for an oil change?

Owner's manuals usually list short trips where the engine does not fully warm up, extended idling, stop and go traffic, very cold temperatures, dusty roads and towing. A commute of a few kilometres in January ticks several of those boxes. The manual then gives a shorter oil change interval for those conditions.

Does it matter which oil goes in my car?

Yes. Your manual lists a viscosity, such as 0W20 or 5W30, and often a manufacturer approval such as dexos for GM or a VW or Mercedes standard number. Oil that meets the approval protects the engine the way the manufacturer tested it, and the wrong oil can speed up turbo and timing chain wear.

How much is an oil change at Scorpion Auto Tech?

The oil change price is not posted on the booking page yet. Call (613) 282-7077 or book online and note your vehicle, and you get the price before the work is done.

When should a timing belt be replaced?

Your owner's manual gives the interval in kilometres and years, whichever comes first, and it varies widely by engine. On an interference engine a broken belt can bend valves, so it is worth doing on time. The water pump is often driven by the belt and is usually replaced in the same job.
